Vatican places Society of St. Pius X in schism, excommunicates bishops

The Vatican has formally declared the Society of St. Pius X to be in schism. In the same statement, several bishops of the group were excommunicated. The decision follows longstanding doctrinal disputes. Vatican officials cited breaches of church teaching as the cause. The Society has previously operated semi‑independently from Rome. Excommunication removes the bishops from sacramental duties. The move deepens the rift within the traditionalist Catholic movement. The Vatican says it will continue dialogue with remaining members.
